On Friday morning I like many people in Scotland found myself watching the results of the EU referendum in disbelief as voters across the rest of the UK voted to leave the European Union.

Today Nicola Sturgeon gave a statement on the outcome of the EU referendum. She set out what action the Scottish Government will now take to safeguard our future in Europe, following the unequivocal vote for Scotland to remain in the EU.

Yesterday, Scotland – like London and Northern Ireland – voted overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union.

We voted to protect our place in the world’s biggest single market – and the jobs and investment that depend on it.

Scotland has delivered a strong, unequivocal vote to remain in the EU. The vote here makes clear that the people of Scotland see their future as part of the European Union.

In voting for Remain in such high numbers, Scotland contributed significantly to the UK ‘Remain’ vote.

You’d be surprised by just how many of the rights we take for granted at work are actually guaranteed by the EU. Many of these rights only exist because of EU laws or court decisions.

Being in the EU has been good for our environment. The EU has taken a lead on big global issues like climate change and pollution, it has guaranteed ambitious environmental standards across Europe and it has taken action to protect natural habitats.

Europe is good for Scotland. For Scotland’s families being in the EU means jobs, workplace protections, cheaper travel and consumer protection rights too.
