Parliamentary Assistant to Mairi McAllan MSP

Mairi McAllan MSP is looking for a parliamentary assistant to join her busy constituency team.

Salary: £28,000 – £33,000 pro-rata and dependent on experience.  

Hours Full and Part time (with hybrid options) available  

Based in: Local constituency office in Lanark, Clydesdale 

Responsibilities 

Assisting with casework and communications as well as office administration.

Administration & Casework 

  • Coordinating, progressing and monitoring the handling of enquiries, case work and public correspondence and ensuring they are dealt with timely and professionally. 
  • Meeting constituents on a wide range of issues, including those of a sensitive nature and escalating accordingly. 
  • Advocating on constituent’s behalf with relevant bodies to resolve matters. 
  • Reviewing constituent records and documentation in line with casework GDPR requirements. 
  • Ensuring casework filing systems, both electronic and manual, are kept up to date in line with GDPR requirements. 

Communications 

  • Producing materials that effectively convey my aims to the public and media through a variety of platforms.  
  • Keeping up to date with current media developments. 
  • Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders. 
  • Corresponding with constituents and local campaign groups. 

Requirements 

  • Have excellent organisational skills while being flexible in prioritising workloads during busy times. 
  • Have excellent communications skills, with attention to detail and the ability to work effectively with colleagues. 
  • Be patient and sensitive while remaining objective and open minded. 
  • Be comfortable being in a front facing role explaining regulations such as GDPR to the general public. 
  • Be acutely aware of the responsibility of representing those unable to do so themselves in certain situations. 
  • Have a natural interest in helping people with a curiosity to probe for further information where required. 
  • Have an interest in politics with the confidence to represent someone in a media-related capacity. 
  • Be capable in monitoring media developments and sourcing information from a range of channels.  
  • Have the ability to foster good working relationships with confidence to understand how the media world operates. 
  • Be creative in designing and communicating over a range of formats on different media platforms. 
  • Be able to respond flexibly and creatively to range of requests, such as media enquiries and press releases. 
  • Have flexibility using relevant IT skills and writing styles, covering both traditional and newer forms of media.
