In government, we’re delivering the most competitive package of support for small businesses anywhere in the UK.
Since we introduced the Small Business Bonus scheme, small businesses have saved £1.5 billion. We have now expanded the scheme so that 100,000 businesses pay no rates at all.
This year we have delivered an extra £100 million of rates support for businesses, including a new Business Growth Accelerator. This new relief means new build properties will not pay business rates until they’re occupied and tenants won’t pay rates for their first 12 months.
A number of targeted business rate reliefs have also been put in place this year:
- a new relief for day nurseries to support the increased provision of increased childcare;
- a transitional cap for Aberdeen City and Shire offices and all but the very largest hospitality properties, meaning that 2018-19 bills will rise by no more than 12.5 per cent in real terms for eligible properties; and
- a new 60 per cent relief for hydro energy generation properties.
- And increases in the rates poundage will now be capped at the lower CPI inflation rate, rather than the higher RPI inflation measure.
Powers over most businesses taxes, including Corporation Tax, are reserved to Westminster. SNP MPs won’t support further reductions to Corporation Tax.
To support job creation, the UK government should double the Employment Allowance – the National Insurance discount that businesses get when they create jobs.
To make our economy more productive, the Chancellor should extend the Annual Investment Allowance, which encourages firms to invest in plant and machinery, from £200,000 to £1 million.
To support our oil and gas sector, fresh support should be delivered as part of an industrial strategy that works for Scotland.
And we want tougher rules on tax avoidance and evasion to ensure everyone pays their fair share of taxes. Read more about our tax avoidance policies here.
