Meet the SNP MPs and MSPs that worked in our health service

Our National Health Service is our most cherished institution. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the hardworking men and women who deliver world-class health care day in and day out.

The knowledge and skills of those who work in our NHS is immeasurable and in the SNP we’re very lucky to benefit from that experience in Parliament.

Here are some of the SNP MPs and MSPs who have worked, and often still work, in our health service.

Clare Haughey MSP, Mental Health Nurse

“I have worked in the NHS as a mental health nurse for over 20 years. I’m very proud to have played my part in helping to look after people at some of the most difficult times they have faced, and to have been there on their journey to recovery.”

Emma Harper MSP, Nurse

“The Scottish NHS has played a huge part in my life. I have been a nurse for 34 years. My career has been supported by our NHS, enabling me to work in the USA and England, bringing my knowledge and skills back to Scotland. I have Type 1 Diabetes since 12 years old and have experienced the benefits of our excellent healthcare system in Scotland.”

Lisa Cameron MP, Consultant Clinical Psychologist

“I believe that the NHS represents all that is good about the social fabric of our society. I have dedicated my life’s work to the NHS as a Psychologist before being elected and it was an absolute privilege to do so.”

Philippa Whitford MP, Consultant breast surgeon

“One of the greatest strengths of the NHS is that there is no payment between patient and doctor. As a Breast Cancer surgeon of over 30 years, my patients were not wondering if I was recommending an operation just to get paid, but could trust that I was only thinking of what was best for them. As a doctor this is a real luxury; let’s ensure we keep it that way.”
