Labour will hit one million Scots with higher energy bills
Gas bills to rise in energy-rich Scotland to subsidise warmer homes in the South of England
It is a uniquely bitter paradox that sitting in energy-rich Scotland as we approach winter feels a bit like paying the baker for a cream cake and getting a stale slice of bread.
As we face that winter fresh independent analysis has laid bare the stark reality of the Labour Westminster government’s latest budget.
Rather than delivering relief, Andy Burnham’s new plan to tweak energy pricing will force around one million Scottish households to shoulder even higher energy bills – effectively subsidising warmer homes in the south of England.
According to analysis by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPiCE), over 800,000 Scots are now directly in the firing line for gas bill hikes, while a further 142,000 off-grid households, relying on heating oil, have been left utterly out in the cold.
The decision by the Westminster government to replace standing charges with higher gas unit prices acts like a targeted tax on colder climates.
In local authority areas like East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, Aberdeenshire, Stirling, Argyll and Bute, and Perth and Kinross, average household gas usage shoots straight over the threshold where these changes start punishing consumers.
The geographic unfairness is glaring. Recent YouGov polling showed that 84% of people in Scotland have already had to turn their heating on this autumn, compared to just 59% of residents in London.
Yet, despite Scotland generating the vast majority of the UK’s oil and gas and over a third of its renewable electricity, Scottish families are being asked to foot the bill for London’s milder afternoons.
This latest blow follows a long, dismal sequence of broken vows from the custodians of the Union.
Cast your mind back to 2014, when the anti-independence campaign assured Scottish voters that staying under Westminster’s wing was the only guaranteed route to ensure lower energy bills.
That promise has aged like the ubiquitous carton of unpasteurised milk in a hot summer sun.
Far from delivering lower bills, a decade of Westminster energy policy has left Scotland burdened with some of the highest energy costs in Europe.
If the 2014 referendum vow was a grand optical illusion, Labour’s 2024 election campaign promise is like snow in the Sahara . Scottish voters were explicitly told that electing a UK Labour government would slice £300 off their annual energy bills.
Instead, forecasts indicate that January energy bills could skyrocket by 27% – leaving household costs over £1,000 higher than the figure Labour solemnly pledged just two years ago.
Expecting Westminster to lower Scottish energy bills based on their election promises is like expecting to dry your laundry in a downpour.
As SNP Westminster Leader Dave Doogan MP put it:
“The UK Labour Government tried to pull the wool over the eyes of Scots, but no amount of trickery can hide the sky-high bills that will drop through people’s letter boxes this winter. This is a national scandal that can only be addressed through a fresh start with independence – when we put Scotland’s energy in Scotland’s hands and put our vast resources to work for our people.”
The sequence of events is clear. In 2014, the ‘No’ campaign swore that Westminster control was the only shield against extortionate fuel costs. In 2024, Labour guaranteed a £300 cut to ease the squeeze.
Today, Scots are paying more to heat their homes using energy generated in their own backyard.
When two separate political campaigns hand you the same broken cheque a decade apart, you stop blaming the pen and start changing the bank.
This double breach of public trust proves beyond doubt that Westminster governance is an anchor dragging down Scotland’s potential.
The only way to break this cycle of deception, protect Scottish households, and ensure our vast natural wealth works for our own communities is to take our future into our own hands with independence.
