Creating a more progressive, prosperous and equal society for all

Next week the Scottish Government will put forward their budget proposals for 2019.

Despite a real terms budget cut from the Tories, the 2018 budget delivered a stronger economy and fairer society, providing investment that will help unlock Scotland’s economic potential.

Last year’s financial plan helped prevent a number of heartless Tory welfare reforms from reaching Scotland, while turning a real-terms budget reduction from Westminster into growth for the Scottish economy.

Our changes to income tax created an even fairer and more progressive system, meaning that 70% of Scots now pay less tax while our highest earners pay a little extra – raising an extra £164 million last year and protecting Scotland’s cherished public services.

We increased health spending by over £400 million, provided an extra £120 million direct to head teachers to ensure our young people reach their full potential and lifted the public sector pay cap for police, teachers and NHS staff.

We are committed to continue building one of the world’s most successful economies on a firm foundation of strong and dependable public services.

The budget also delivered £756 million funding to help the Scottish Government achieve its commitment to develop 50,000 affordable homes by 2021 – two-thirds of which will be for social rent.

And to secure a strong Scottish economy for businesses to develop and thrive, £4 billion investment was allocated to a number of infrastructure projects and a business rates relief package of more than £720 million was announced.

We are committed to continue building one of the world’s most successful economies on a firm foundation of strong and dependable public services.

I know the Finance Secretary’s plans will be bold, ambitious and drive Scotland forward on its path to create a more progressive, prosperous and equal society for all.
