Introducing Mhairi’s Campaign Diary: Edinburgh Northern & Leith

As the youth ambassador for our Scottish Parliament election campaign, I’ll be visiting Holyrood constituencies across Scotland in the run up to the 5th May.

The first stop on my campaign tour was Edinburgh Northern and Leith to meet our candidate Ben Macpherson. A great afternoon of visits were organised by Ben and his team and I was very excited to meet everyone.

After meeting the team at the campaign hub in the middle of the community in Leith, Ben and I went along to the Word of Mouth Café to meet young people from the Scottish Youth Parliament. We heard all about the SYP’s latest Lead The Way manifesto and it was brilliant to see young people taking an active role in shaping Scotland’s future and making sure their voice is heard.

The Spartans Community Football Academy was the next stop on our tour of Edinburgh Northern and Leith where Doug showed us around the fantastic facilities. The Scottish Parliament elections on 5th May will be the first opportunity for many of the young people we met to vote, so they were keen to meet their candidate Ben.

And, turns out I can still heel flick a football! Still got it.

Granton Youth Centre was our last stop of the day. Youth workers at the centre, Mary and Gill, told Ben and I about the different projects they run in the area. We heard about the detached youth work they run in the local community to ensure all the young people in the area get the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Some of the guys from the local Kabo Boxing Gym took a short break from training to come say hi to Ben, and SNP Youth Lothian Association also dropped by to show their support before they headed out canvassing.

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who welcomed me to Edinburgh Northern and Leith. You have a brilliant candidate in Ben Macpherson, he is so passionate about the area and I wish him and his team all the very best with the rest of the campaign.
