Annabelle Ewing

Cowdenbeath

Annabelle Ewing has been the MSP for Cowdenbeath since 2016, having previously been an MSP for the Mid Scotland and Fife region from 2011 to 2016. Annabelle was also the MP for Perth from 2001 to 2005.

Born in 1960, Annabelle studied law at the University of Glasgow and graduated in 1981 with an honours degree in EC Law. Annabelle pursued post-graduate studies in Bologna and Amsterdam. She worked as a solicitor in Glasgow and Brussels before entering politics.

She is a passionate advocate for social justice and a life-long supporter of Scottish Independence. She has been involved in the SNP and the wider independence movement since she was seven years old, following the sensational victory of her mother Winnie Ewing at the 1967 Hamilton by-election.

She is the younger sister of Fergus Ewing, MSP for Inverness and Nairn and her late father Stewart Ewing was a Glasgow SNP Councillor, and her late sister-in-law, Margaret Ewing, was MP for East Dunbartonshire, and the MP and MSP for Moray.

Annabelle has held several ministerial positions in the Scottish Government, including as Minister for Youth and Women’s Employment (2014-2016), and Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs (2016-2018). She is currently the First Deputy Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

Away from politics, Annabelle enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, and gardening.
