SNP council election manifesto: what you need to know

By , 21/04/17

Today Nicola Sturgeon launched the SNP’s manifesto for the 4 May council elections in Edinburgh. Read the manifesto in full here.

Here’s what you need to know.

More free childcare to transform early learning.

SNP councils will work with the Scottish Government to almost double the free early learning and childcare families receive to around 30 hours a week. Childcare provision will be more flexible, with parents able to choose how to access their additional hours. We’ll also ensure that children in childcare and early learning receive two hours a week of physical activity, with at least one hour a week outside.

Extra money for classrooms.

SNP councils will prioritise closing the attainment gap and ensure that every child in Scotland gets the best start in life. We’ll give more power and resources directly to schools to allow teachers, parents and communities to make the best decisions for their schools.

More affordable housing, increasing supply and accessibility.

SNP councils will build their share of 50,000 new affordable houses across Scotland, and work with housing associations to ensure at least 35,000 of these will be houses for social rent.

Cash for communities, devolving council budgets to local projects.

We will listen and act on the priorities of local communities - putting them at the centre of decision-making. We’ll devolve a minimum of one per cent of each council’s budget directly to communities, giving citizens the ability to choose where this money is spent locally and allow for innovative ways to deliver on their priorities.

Backing for small business, boosting jobs and helping keep people in work.

Small businesses will continue to benefit from the our extended Small Business Bonus Scheme and councils will also be able to offer rate reductions to meet local economic challenges. We will also increase government spending with local small and medium sized firms, revising procurement strategies to help local firms thrive.

If protecting local services and jobs matters to you, be a voter on May 4th. Vote SNP to elect a strong team of effective SNP councillors that will work to improve and protect your local services.
