Our plan for Scotland: what it means for LGBTI people

By , 15/09/16

The First Minister has set out the Scottish Government’s plans for the next year.

On LGBTI equality, Scotland is already rated the best country in Europe, but there’s much still to do. Here’s just some of the action we’re taking to deliver equality for all LGBTI people.

  • We will require all new guidance and promoted teachers – and eventually all teachers – to undertake training on equality, so they are confident in tackling prejudice-based bullying.

  • We will work with the General Teaching Council for Scotland to ensure that schools address the important issues that LGBTI young people face, and that teachers have the skills, knowledge and confidence to take inclusive approaches in their schools.

  • By summer 2017 we will consult on reforming the Gender Recognition Act to ensure our gender recognition law is in line with international best practice.

  • The Scottish Government is working with Stonewall Scotland to support NHS Health Boards in tackling LGBTI discrimination.

  • We will establish an Equality in Sport and Physical Activity Forum to encourage the removal of barriers to participation in sport, including those for women and the LGBTI community.

  • Sport Scotland will ensure that funding for all sports includes conditions on taking action to tackle LGBTI discrimination. We have already provided £38,000 to LEAP Sports Scotland this year to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in sports.

  • We will continue work to reduce the stigma of HIV, raise awareness of the condition and reduce its transmission.

  • We will support new research on reducing transmission of HIV, including through PrEP. A separate working group will also look at the clinical utility of PrEP in Scotland.
