What is the SNP doing on smoking & vaping?
The SNP is committed to creating a tobacco‑free Scotland by 2034, with Scotland already having world‑leading tobacco‑control measures, with smoking rates continuing to decline.
The Tobacco and Vaping Framework – launched on 22 November 2023 – sets out the roadmap to 2034 and outlines decisive actions, including work linked to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
The suite of preventative measures aims to help people manage respiratory conditions and protect future generations.
In line with the Framework, work is underway to improve the technical infrastructure of the register of tobacco and nicotine vapour product retailers – a move welcomed by stakeholders
The reintroduction of the United Kingdom-wide Tobacco and Vapes Bill is welcomed and will help achieve this ambitious target.
Within the 2024–25 Programme for Government, the Scottish Government committed to:
- Working across the four nations on banning the sale of single‑use vapes (SUVs).
- Working on the UK Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
The Scottish Government continues to collaborate across the 4 nations on the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, supporting the ambition for a tobacco‑free Scotland by 2034; and the single‑use vape ban will be implemented from 1 June 2025, in line with the rest of the UK.
