How is the SNP tackling obesity?
Improving health and supporting people to eat well and have a healthy weight is a public health priority.
Scotland needs to address the high levels of excess weight, obesity and poor diet we know are contributing to worsening trends in Scotland’s health.
Around two-thirds of all adults in Scotland (67%) are living with overweight (including obesity), with one third (33%) of children being at risk of overweight (including obesity).
Our 2018 Diet & Healthy Weight Delivery Plan sets out ambitious and wide-ranging actions to ensure everyone in Scotland can eat well and has a healthy weight.
The SNP is also acting to ensure food manufacturers and processors restrict promotion of foods high in fat, sugar or salt at the point of purchase.
This is to reduce the public health harms associated with the excess consumption of calories, fat, sugar and salt.
This also includes the risks of developing type 2 diabetes, various types of cancer and other conditions such as cardiovascular disease.
Restricting the promotion of less healthy food and drink is intended to make it easier for people to spend less on HFSS products and make healthier choices.
