How is the SNP encouraging sport across Scotland?

Through the SNP Scottish Government’s 2026‑27 Budget, we have shown our commitment to encouraging sport amongst Scotland’s young people.

Building on the SFA’s excellent Extra Time initiative, the budget will enable us to trial a programme of activities between 3 and 6 pm in a range of primary schools, helping to get kids active and offering parents the peace of mind that their children are being looked after, free of screens.

To mark Scotland’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games, and return to the men’s Football World Cup in 2026, the SNP are providing additional investment in a ‘summer of sport’.

We know just how costly it can be for parents to keep their kids entertained during the long summer holiday, so this summer, thousands of young Scots will have access to a range of free sport activities, including.
