What is the SNP position on UK government welfare cuts?

The Tories have cut taxes for the wealthiest in our society, while cutting support for the disabled and low income working families.

The decade of devastating austerity inflicted on Scotland by Tory governments has led to lasting harm being imposed on our public services, economy and families. Welfare cuts have been the key factor in the rise in poverty and food bank use during the Tories’ time in office.

SNP MPs at Westminster are leading the way in campaigning against these cuts, and the SNP Scottish Government has done what it can by mitigating the Bedroom Tax, boosting Carer’s Allowance and establishing a new social security system – but the best way to protect Scotland from austerity is by becoming an independent country.
