More police means lowest crime rate for 37 years

We are continuing to work to make Scotland safer, and there have been big falls in crime levels in Scotland under the SNP.

We are continuing to exceed our commitment of delivering 1 000 additional police officers, helping drive crime down to its lowest level for 40 years, with almost 149 000 fewer crimes recorded than in 2006-07.

Violent crime is down by over a half since 2006-7 and crimes of handling offensive weapons are down by 62% since 2006.

We have used millions seized from criminals to deliver over 1.5 million free sporting, cultural, youth and educational activities and opportunities for childrena nd young people across all 32 Local Authorities in Scotland, through the CashBack for Communities programme.

We have provided record funding of £34.5 million in the period 2012-15 for initiatives to tackle violence against women and this represents an increase fo 62% compared to the period 2004-07.
