Joan McAlpine

South Scotland

Joan McAlpine MSP was elected to The Scottish Parliament in 2011 to represent the South Scotland region for the SNP.

Joan is Convenor of the Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Affairs Committee of the Scottish Parliament.  The committee has conducted a major enquiry into the implications of the EU referendum result for Scotland, producing four separate reports on Brexit, which have all been well received.

Joan is also the founder and Convenor of the parliament’s Cross Party Group on Culture and Deputy Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Learning Disability.

Before being elected to The Scottish Parliament she had a long and successful career in Scottish newspapers.  She was the editor of The Sunday Times in Scotland and Deputy Editor of The Herald as well as writing a weekly column for both these titles and The Scotsman.

She is a former Scotland Journalist of the Year.
