Manufacturing is hugely important to Scotland’s economy, accounting for over half of our international exports and employing nearly 190,000 people across the country. We’ve made relentless efforts to protect manufacturing jobs, notably saving Scotland’s remaining steel works from closure.
In government, the SNP is working to make sure we have an innovative manufacturing industry that creates high-skilled, well-paid jobs into the future.
In 2016, we introduced a Manufacturing Action Plan to increase investment, innovation and productivity in the sector.
We have established a National Manufacturing Institute to deliver benefits for companies of all sizes in sectors across Scotland, backed up with £48 million Scottish Government funding.
We have also introduced The Advanced Manufacturing Challenge Fund of up to £18 million to ensure all parts of Scotland benefit from developments in advanced manufacturing.
We are tackling skills shortages by promoting STEM subjects throughout the school curriculum and improving engagement between industry and education.
