An SNP-led Council will provide the leadership necessary to allow everyone in our city to flourish - driving improvements in education and adult social care while increasing spending on road, waste services and affordable housing.
Few things are as important as the home you live in. Having a home that is affordable, warm and secure is one of the fundamental building blocks of a happy life. And it is one of the key priorities for the SNP in Edinburgh.
In administration, we have built over 5,200 new affordable homes across the city and invested in our council homes.
We’ve led efforts to improve standards across our council homes - delivering thousands of new kitchens and bathrooms to council tenants in the last five years as part of a £275 million refurbishment programme.
But there’s much more we want to do.
At a national level, the SNP Scottish Government is committed to building 50,000 affordable homes across Scotland by 2021, 70 per cent of which will be for social rent.
In Edinburgh we’re standing on a commitment to build 20,000 affordable homes during the next council administration. Increasingly housing supply is much needed in parts of Edinburgh where private rents are rising quickly. Working alongside the Scottish Government, an SNP-led council will also take action on unacceptably high rent increases in the city.
We’ll also work with the Scottish Government to ensure that by March 2021 all temporary accommodation is of the same standard as permanent accommodation. We’ll consider the proximity of temporary accommodation to health and education services. And we will also take steps to make sure that families with children are never being housed in unsuitable Bed and Breakfast accommodation.
We are absolutely committed to working with housing associations and developers to make sure we deliver the affordable housing that people need. And that is why we need SNP-led Councils up and down the country after May 4th.
