Parliamentary Business Assistant for the SNP Parliamentary Group

The SNP’s Central Office is searching for a Parliamentary Business Assistant to support the SNP Parliamentary Group.

Salary: £26,000 per annum

Hours: 35 hours per week

Location: Holyrood

Job Purpose

The SNP Parliamentary Group of MSPs is looking to employ a full time Parliamentary Business Assistant with immediate effect. This role in the SNP’s Central Office in the Scottish Parliament will involve the successful applicant working closely with the Parliamentary Business Coordinator, SNP MSP Group Executive and Whips Team to ensure the implementation and smooth operation of daily Parliamentary business and group functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for the SNP MSP group and managing enquiries within agreed timescales responding to and/or directing queries including resolving conflicting demands
  • Working closely with the Parliamentary Business Coordinator to tight deadlines to administer SNP Group functions including oral questions as required by Parliamentary rules
  • Assisting the Parliamentary Business Coordinator as required
  • Liaising with various offices in the Scottish Parliament on behalf of the SNP Parliamentary Group
  • Communicating relevant information to SNP MSPs and their staff and supporting them in fulfilling Parliamentary business and group duties
  • Organising large group events as and when required, including away days, staff training and social events
  • Providing support for meetings
  • Assisting with general office admin and office logistics in the Central Office
  • Providing general assistance and administration for the SNP MSP Group as required
  • Assisting the Parliamentary Business Coordinator with ad-hoc tasks as required
  • Maintaining filing system and managing records

About You

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience of working in the Scottish Parliament is advantageous although not essential
  • Applicants must have an interest in and firm knowledge of current Scottish politics, Parliamentary business, timetables and procedures.
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks and competing demands in a fast-paced work environment, including meeting tight weekly deadlines.
  • Able to demonstrate robust political instincts, quick understanding and ability to communicate effectively using initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work at all levels of an organisation
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage projects over a period of time
