Joan McAlpine MSP

South Scotland

Joan McAlpine has been an MSP for the South of Scotland since 2011.

She sits on the Welfare Reform Committee and the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee and is co-convenor of the cross party group on carers and co-convenor of the cross party group on culture. Joan writes a weekly column for The Daily Record. Before entering politics she was a successful journalist.

She has won awards including Scottish Journalist of the Year 1999 and the Oliver Brown Award for journalism in 2011. She was deputy editor of The Herald newspaper and editor of the Sunday Times in Scotland as well as being a writer for The Scotsman and a regular commentator on television and radio as well as print.

She has an MA (Hons) in Economic and Scottish History from Glasgow University and is the mother of two grown up daughters.
