How the EU benefits Scotland’s families

Europe is good for Scotland. For Scotland’s families being in the EU means jobs, workplace protections, cheaper travel and consumer protection rights too.

Here are just some of the benefits of a Remain vote on 23 June for Scotland’s families.

• EU membership means jobs and opportunities here in Scotland. The EU is the top destination for our international exports, with over 300,000 jobs estimated to be linked to Scotland’s exports to the rest of the EU.

• Vital employment rights are protected. EU regulations mean that workers in Scotland have a right to equal pay, are entitled to 20 days paid leave each year and to work no more than 48 hours a week.

• EU regulations protect paid maternity leave. Because of EU decisions, workers are entitled to 14 weeks maternity leave, with at least statutory sick pay, and, on the birth or adoption of a child, the right to four months parental leave too.

• Being part of the EU means easier, safer and cheaper travel. Action by the EU has enabled budget airlines to enter the market and make travel more affordable. You can claim compensation if your journey to an EU country is delayed or cancelled. From next next year, roaming charges will be removed. And, if you have an accident anywhere in the EU, you can access the same public healthcare as residents of the country you are visiting.

• Consumer rights are protected within the EU. The EU protects consumer rights by guaranteeing the safety and quality of products and services purchased within the European Union. And, even when shopping outside of Scotland, consumers have the right to return unsatisfactory products within 14 days.
