Celebrating the Year of the Dad

Today Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People, is launching Year of the Dad – joining the celebration of dads and the important role they play every day – in child development, family and community life. The year-long celebration is organised by Fathers Network Scotland and supported by the Scottish Government.

Year of the Dad plays an important part in the work we’re doing in government on equality. And, action we’re taking – like expanding childcare, free school meals, and protecting our vital public services like the NHS – is benefitting families across the country.

There are many great things about being a dad. Here are few of the favourite things from some of the dads in the SNP:

John Swinney, Deputy First Minister:

“My favourite thing about being a dad is you get to do all the things – the fun things – that you did a long time ago, which you enjoyed, and then you can recreate them with your kids. I suppose running along the beach with a kite is probably right up there in my favourite things.”

Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Health Improvement:

“If I had to say what is the best thing about being a dad, it would have to be watching two young people grow and see the adults they’re going to be emerge, and see them changing each day – and it’s a real privilege to be part of that and help shape them.”

Neil Gray, MP for Airdrie & Shotts:

“My favourite things about being a dad are seeing her explore and discover new things, seeing the feeling of pride come across her face as she achieves something new and, of course, reading her favourite bedtime story.”
