The SNP Westminster Group is looking to employ a part time (30 hours/week) Business Manager to be based at the House of Commons.
Working in the Group Leader’s office, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in running the work of the third largest party in the UK Parliament. They will report to the Head of the Group Leader’s office and will support the the Group Leader and other members of the Group Executive on all matters related to the Group’s finance, employment and other operational responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate high quality business planning and communications skills as well as discretion and judgement. An excellent understanding of the UK political context and how it may affect finance and employment responsibilities will be important, while knowledge and understanding of the SNP’s aims and objectives would be strongly advantageous.
The Business Manager will be responsible for leading recruitment exercises; drawing up staff contracts; advising the Group Executive on key staff issues such as pay, terms and conditions and health and safety; ensuring correct and timely payment of salaries; maintaining key documents such as the staff handbook; ensuring operation of staff systems including appraisal; and supporting the Executive in dealing with other staff matters.
The Business Manager will be responsible for operating the Group’s financial systems and advising the Executive on budget matters; ensuring accurate record-keeping; liaising with the House of Commons authorities and the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority over regulatory matters, as well as the Electoral Commission and the Group’s auditors on submission of accounts; and implementing an efficient system for payment of bills and expenses. The successful candidate will require expert knowledge of budget management.
The Business Manager will also carry out and advise on other aspects of the Group’s operational responsibilities. These will include ensuring access to necessary external services such as research and legal advice, including drawing up and monitoring contracts; maintaining dialogue with SNP headquarters in Edinburgh over operational issues; acting as a channel of communications with the House of Commons authorities over staff support, office management and security issues; and other operational duties as necessary.
