The Scottish National Party has called for a "major Afghanistan rethink". Having supported the initial United Nations backed intervention; the SNP now says "the time has come to look at all the options before it is too late".

The Ministry of Defence is coming under criticism for delaying the implementation of key safety recommendations in Nimrod aircraft.

Following the verdict today of the Oxfordshire Coroner, Andrew Walker, on the deaths of 14 servicemen killed when their Nimrod spy plane exploded in Afghanistan in 2006, SNP Westminster leader, Angus Robertson MP, has called on the Secretary of State for Defence to make an immediate statement.

Only days before the conclusions of a Coroners Inquest into the loss of a Nimrod aircraft in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) has confirmed that not all safety recommendations have been fully complied with for the ageing aircraft.
