SNP on start of EU Reform Treaty Negotiations
Alyn Smith today welcomed the launch of the Inter-Governmental Conference on the proposed EU reform treaty.
The IGC will bring forward the final proposals for reform of the EU, replacing the failed European Constitution. It is expected to report in October.
Commenting on the launch Mr Smith said:
"While welcoming the re-launch of this EU reform process as a way of making an EU of 27 member states work more efficiently and effectively, it is essential that those involved in the negotiations recognise that they must come forward with a text that truly reflects the aspirations and concerns of all of the EU's peoples, including Scotland.
"I welcome the fact that the European Parliament is involved in this process, though I believe a stronger role should have been given to Europe's only democratically elected body.
"If there is a lesson to draw from the failed European Constitution it is that Europe's citizens are not prepared to be railroaded.
"If the Reform Treaty is to stand some chance of being accepted across the EU, and indeed in Scotland, it must offer real improvements to the EU and the people of Europe. It should not simply seek to introduce the former constitution by the back door
"The SNP wants to see sensible rational reform of the EU. We could not recommend the previous treaty which made real constitutional change to our relationship with Europe that was unacceptable. We await the results of the new IGC with interest."
