CPS Announce No Charges in Cash for Honours

Angus MacNeil, the MP who initiated the Cash for Honours investigation, has today (Friday) commented following news from the Crown Prosecution Service that no charges will be brought. The investigation has lasted more than 16 months, and produced a police dossier of 6 300 documents.

Mr MacNeil said:

"The police have been diligent and determined throughout, and have pursued their enquiry without fear or favour, despite enormous political pressure on them to throw in the towel.

"It simply beggars belief that the police and the CPS both believe no charges should be brought. If this is the case, the next few weeks will be extremely interesting, with Assistant Commissioner Yates having promised the Public Administration committee that all the evidence assembled will be made public if required.

"The Committee now has an enormous responsibility to ensure that there is no hint of whitewash about this conclusion.

"It is hard to believe that this decision has been based on evidence, and not politics."
