EU Treaty

The House of Commons voted to reject giving the public a say in whether the UK should sign the EU Treaty, also known as the Lisbon Treaty.

This Treaty was, in our opinion, almost identical to the EU Constitution, on which the Labour Government promised voters a referendum.

All 6 of the SNP MP's voted for a referendum. We also tabled an amendment seeking to remove fisheries as an exclusive competence from the Treaty. This would mean that responsibility for fisheries and marine conservation would return to national control.

The UK Government agreed to the Lisbon Treaty without seeking any changes to the text which enshrines fisheries in the EU Reform Treaty as an ‘exclusive competence’. National control of fisheries is a ‘red line’ issue for the Scottish Government.

In a bizarre twist, the Liberal Democrats created a massive split within their own party. Despite a poll showing that 70% of Lib Dem voters wanted a two-question referendum and only 2% backed the plan to abstain on the vote, new Leader Nick Clegg decided to do just that, forcing 3 front bench spokespeople to resign.

The SNP believe that the Lisbon Treaty should have been put to the people. Fisheries, a vital industry to Scotland, should have been returned to national control. Only with independence can Scotland truly have a say in Europe.

Have your say below.

EU Treaty Consultative Referenum.

A motion to call a referendum on the EU Treaty barely passed at the Spring Conference and many of the party officers now seem to think it would be a distraction from other campaigns on the part of a busy SNP. Given that it is only consusltative they have a point.

However the SNP campaign is for Independence in Europe - without confidence in Europe it is harder to convince people Independence is safe. Would the EU Election istelf be too late a date to hold a Referendum, given that it is only consultative anyway?

The inportant thing is to see that the Treaty can be accepted by Scots even though the English would have voted it down. Pity we couldn't run a referendum vote on the same day as the EU electyion itself. Those who actually vote would be more likely to support the EU.

EU Dictatatorship

Why are all the European goverments but with the exception of the Irish goverment unwilling to let the people have a say . Is it because they know like Britian it would be a majority vote against .

So much for living in a democratic society . Politicians need to listen more to the people and not ignore their views . Labour have ignored the Brittish people at their pearl . Labour promised us a referendum and renaged .

GOOD ON THE IRISH GOVERMENT , other European countries need to learn from them and not duck difficult decisions.

i know little of the EU

i know little of the EU treaty for one reason. i have no interest in anything relating to the EU. i fail to see the difference between the current EU organisation and the regime that would be in place had we not beaten Hitler in WW2. a vast range of countries dictated to by a small group of unelected 'leaders'.

i also fail to see any advantage to the UK from being a member of the EU. i would like to know where SNP stands on this. are SNP  about to relieve us from the EU dictatorship or merely the EU treaty?
