Organ Donation

Nicola Sturgeon (cutout)

The Scottish Government have launched a hard hitting advertisement campaign to persuade people to sign up for organ donation.

The campaign coincides with the UK Organ Donation Task Force, who are looking at the issue of presumed consent for organ donation – a system whereby people are placed on the organ donor register unless they specifically state otherwise.

There is a desperate shortage of organs for transplant and fewer than 1 in 3 Scots (29%) have joined the Organ Donor Register. The Scottish Government aims to increase the rate of organ donation by 50 % in 5 years.

Up to 90% of people support organ donation but in reality only 23 % register as donors. Do you believe that the organ donor register is important? Do you donate blood? Should there be a system of presumed consent, or should it be up to the relatives to decide?

Organ Donation

Organ donation is a great idea and I believe that more people will subscribe as it becomes easier to do so thanks to online registration etc.

However I believe it is not acceptable to presume consent and that people should be able to refuse donation as a basic human right.

Where there is no expressed desire on the part of the prospective donor to participate then they should by default be presumed to have declined.

"The person" should be respected even in death.
