Biography
Maureen is Minister for Schools and Skills in the Department of Education & Lifelong Learning.
Maureen was born in Aberdeen and brought up on a farm outside Keith, Banffshire. She is the daughter of Hamish Watt who was SNP MP for Banffshire from 1974 to 1979 and attended Keith Grammar School and went on to study at Strathclyde University where she obtained an Honours degree in Politics.
She also went on to Birmingham University where she gained the Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Subsequently for three years she was a Social Studies teacher at Bulmershe School, Woodley, Reading, Berkshire where she taught Economics, Sociology and Community Studies to early leavers and where she was also promoted to Head of Community Studies.
Maureen returned to Scotland and became a Personnel Assistant with an international oil drilling company in Aberdeen where she rose to the position of Personnel Manager.
She also lectured in Employee Relations at Aberdeen College. She has been a Councillor on the former Grampian Region, an Independent Assessor of Public Appointments and a Prison Visitor.
She is married with two teenage children.
