Biography

Alasdair is a regional MSP for the South of Scotland and a Deputy Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

He was first elected as an MP to the House of Commons at Westminster in 1997 for the constituency of Galloway & Upper Nithsdale, when he defeated the sitting Conservative cabinet minister Ian Lang, and served there until 2001.

He was elected to the Scottish Parliament as MSP for that same constituency in 1999, becoming a regional MSP in 2003.

Alasdair was born in Aberfeldy in 1945 and is married with two grown-up daughters and two granddaughters. Educated at Breadalblane Academy, Aberfeldy, and Glasgow University, he has an MA (Hons) from Glasgow and a BA (Hons) from the Open University.

Before being elected Alasdair worked in the computer software industry for some 22 years and prior to that he was a teacher of mathematics, his last post being at the Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart.
