Glasgow deserves better
The SNP hit out at the Labour administration in Glasgow City Council after plans to slash services and cut jobs across the City emerged last night.
Despite receiving the highest grant of any local authority on mainland Scotland, the Labour council is preparing to cut community services, sports facilities, disability centres, child therapists, school buses and school breakfasts in a bid to save £4m.
Council bosses have also announced 600 job losses and imminent plans axe a further 4000 posts.
SNP MSP for Glasgow Bob Doris said:
“This is Labour’s real Glasgow rip off.
“From Alistair Darling to Stephen Purcell, Labour have their priorities all wrong. Cutting public spending in the teeth of a recession is absolutely the wrong thing to do and putting more Glaswegians out of work is unforgivable.
“This Downing Street downturn is already tough for people across Glasgow and these swingeing cuts will only make it tougher.
“The 2010/11 local government settlement figures show that despite the London spending squeeze the SNP has ensured Glasgow City Council gets over 25% more per head than the Scottish average, the highest funding per head of any mainland local authority in Scotland. SNP MP for Glasgow East John Mason added:
“This is the nightmare before Christmas for families across Glasgow.
“Willie Bain and the Glasgow Labour party should be ashamed. Their scaremongering in the by-election has been exposed – while they lectured the SNP on a luxury rail link, they were planning to slash basic services the people of Glasgow depend on. “Labour hypocrisy beggars belief.
“Voters promised the earth by Labour last month in Glasgow North East have been kicked in the teeth.”
