Securing jobs in Scotland’s oil sector

SNP Energy Spokesperson Mike Weir MP has cautiously welcomed proposals by Chancellor Alastair Darling to offer tax breaks to the oil and gas sector.

Speaking from the SNP's 75th annual conference, Mr Weir said:

"Any incentive that will ensure the strength of the oil and gas sector in Scotland - especially the development of the West of Shetland basin - would be welcome but we must reserve judgement until more detail is given.

"The SNP have long called for fiscal changes to support and facilitate the sector - encouraging the development of this important natural resource and securing jobs in the long term.

"Scotland has both the natural resources and the professional skills to ensure a sustainable future for this vital sector."
