MP to fight social network snooping
SNP Home Affairs spokesperson, Pete Wishart MP, is set to establisha Facebook group against proposals by the UK Government to monitor socialnetworking sites such as Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.
Mr Wishart described proposals to monitor and record detailsof exchanges and profiles from social network sites on a Home Office databaseas ‘Big Brother gone bonkers’, and the MP plans to start a Facebook fight-backagainst the proposals.
Mr Wishart said:
“These grossly intrusive plans by the Home Office are another case of BigBrother gone bonkers.
“Not content with their unwanted and expensive ID card plans, the UK governmentis now set on snooping through social network sites.
“We are talking about sites used by tens of millions of people which containpersonal information such as religious and political beliefs, and sexualorientation. These issues are no business of government bureaucrats.
“The UK Government’s appalling record of data securitywill have alarm bells ringing, and that is in itself an argument against theseplans which will do nothing to improve national security.
“I think once people realise what the Home Office has planned, that Ministerswill be hit with a Facebook fightback.”
