About the Campaign
Labour’s closure plans for the Post Office caused undue anguish and despair across Scotland, leaving many unable to access the postal service. The SNP believe that we cannot afford to put the rest of our postal service in private hands.
The plans put over 193,000 jobs at risk, and threatens Royal Mail’s “universal service” obligation to deliver mail to every UK home.
The legislation is expected to be rushed through Parliament without consultation and is directly in contrast to the Labour manifesto of 2005, which promised to keep Royal Mail in the public sector.
News has also emerged alleging that the Royal Mail pension fund is at risk unless the sale goes through. The SNP believes this sort of blackmail reinforces the case against bringing in a private partner – leading to possible job losses, service cuts and a deterioration in the working conditions of postal workers.
The SNP believe its vital that Royal Mail does not lose its social focus which could impact further on rural areas.
