SNP welcome Independence poll figures
Welcoming the TNS System Three opinion poll in the Sunday Herald which puts support for independence at 35%, with 43% opposed – an 8-point gap compared to a 15-point gap in August 2007 SNP depute Leader and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP said;
“This is a very encouraging poll, which confirms that support for independence and equality for Scotland is extremely strong. The 15-point gap in the summer of 2007 has halved to just 8 points now.
“Labour’s negative attacks on Scotland’s abilities and aspirations have come unstuck as the number supporting the union falls.
“The SNP Government will bring forward a bill for a referendum in 2010, and challenge the London parties not to stand in the way of the people’s right to choose Scotland’s future. And this poll shows that support for independence is high enough and strong enough for that referendum to be won.”
The TNS System Three poll asks the independence question in the Scottish Government’s National Conversation White Paper.
The result in August 2007 was:
Support independence: 35%
Oppose independence: 50%
