Cold comfort from Brown on rising fuel prices

Commenting on Gordon Brown's statement that he believes fuel and energy bills will come down anyway and "should be reflected in gas and electricity bills in the next round", SNP Central Fife SNP MSP Tricia Marwick said it his remarks actually reflected how out of touch Labour remained and only a vote for the SNP would see action on rocketing bills.

Commenting Tricia Marwick said:

"People in Glenrothes are calling out for help and support now with their soaring household bills, not spin that belies the reality ordinary people are facing.

"Hard pressed households are going to be suffering from sky high heating bills THIS winter – the prospect of 'jam tomorrow' NEXT winter is of cold comfort, and shows just out of touch Gordon Brown has become from the reality ordinary people face. It is a huge issue on every doorstep, and the people in Fife will have the chance to speak for the whole of Scotland on November 6th.

"People in Fife know that the SNP Government is on their side. We've put money back in their purses and pockets by abolishing tolls on the Forth and Tay bridges, freezing the council tax and reducing prescription charges.

"A vote for the SNP is a vote for action on fuel and energy bills with our three point plan to help hard pressed local households.

"Firstly, a vote for the SNP is a vote for the suspension of VAT on fuel over the cold winter months; an extra £100 for each pensioner household to help make ends meet; and third a cut in the rate of VAT on energy efficiency works such as home insulation.

"Another Labour MP in Glenrothes will mean Gordon Brown can think he can continue as he has done till now. Just as Glasgow East delivered a freeze on fuel duty so to the Glenrothes by-election can deliver action on energy bills."

Notes:

In addition to abolishing tolls, freezing council tax and cutting prescription charges the SNP Government has also delivered:

* a record number of central heating installations last year

* an agreement with the power companies to make sure Scotland gets every penny it is due to boost energy efficiency and cut bills; and

* plans to extend benefits health checks to all those applying to the Warm Deal programme
