Stamp duty dithering must end now

SNP Treasury spokesperson, Stewart Hosie MP, has accused the Chancellor, of damaging dither and delay after raising questions about the future of stamp duty.

Mr Hosie said:

“Uncertainty over stamp duty now risks making an already difficult situation for house sellers and the construction industry even worse.

“The housing market is already fragile, and by raising the prospect of suspending stamp duty Alistair Darling has unwittingly made it more difficult for people who are trying to sell their homes now.

“Of course, measures to help people with housing costs is welcome, but by dithering and postponing a decision until the autumn, buyers are likely to delay buying until the Chancellor has made his mind up.

“The last thing the housing market needs is more uncertainty and, without delay, the Chancellor must put up or shut up on his intentions on stamp duty.”
