Glasgow East wins with the SNP
2008-07-23
The SNP campaign today returned to The Hub in Wellhouse, the location of the campaign launch, for the climax of the SNP's by-election campaign in Glasgow East.
SNP Candidate Cllr John Mason was joined by SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond, Deputy Leader Nicola Sturgeon, local councillors, veteran Clydesider Jimmy Reid, Wellhouse residents and many of the people who have shown support to and met with the SNP throughout the campaign.
SNP Candidate John Mason said;
"It has been a privilege to campaign across the Glasgow East constituency and it will be an honour to be chosen to serve as the MP for Glasgow East, to represent the many people I have met on the doorsteps, in the shopping centres and at community organisations across the constituency.
"An SNP victory in Glasgow East on Thursday will send a strong message to Gordon Brown.
"It will put the East End on the map and make sure that our voice is heard.
"Labour has had their chance, they have had 50 years and they are out of touch. A vote for Labour will change nothing, it is only an SNP MP that can make a difference for the East End.
"I have served the East End for 10 years as a councillor. I know the East End, I live in the East End and I will speak out for the East End.
"Over the last year the SNP Government has delivered funding for 1000 more police, a council tax freeze and lower prescription charges.
"Over the last three weeks the SNP has heard the message from Glasgow East as people in this constituency call for a reduction in fuel duty, for action on energy prices and for a fair share for the East End.
"The SNP is on your side – when the SNP wins, you win.
"We have seen the Labour Government respond to SNP pressure with a freeze on fuel duty. Voters in Glasgow East now have a chance to increase that pressure and to secure a fair deal for the East End by voting SNP.
"Tomorrow's election is a chance to send a strong message from Glasgow East to Gordon Brown and elect a real local MP for the East End."
Joining Cllr John Mason SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond said;
"This has been a tremendous SNP campaign and it will continue all the way to the wire.
"The support shown to the SNP by people across Glasgow East has been phenomenal.
"The community spirit that thrives across the East End, the action being taken by local organisations, by communities and by individuals to improve the East End, to tackle the problems and fulfil the potential of Glasgow East is inspiring.
"People in Glasgow East are taking action, the SNP Government is taking action, now it is time for the UK Government to take action.
"This campaign has been about the bread and butter issues that matter to people in Glasgow East. As the cost of living continues to rise we have seen the impact SNP pressure can bring – we have seen that when the SNP wins, the people of Glasgow East win.
"Glasgow East can be the epicentre of a political earthquake.
"There is already a tremor taking place across the constituency – tomorrow we could feel the full force of a political earthquake."

Amongst others the SNP campaign has included visits to the following organisations – The Hub – Wellhouse, New Easterhouse Credit Union, Laura McGhee, McPhie's Crafter Bakers, Marshalls of Ballieston, Betty Thompson, Commonwealth boxing hopeful Jonathan Slowey, Tollcross Leisure Centre, Global Glasgow Youth, Shettleston Post Office, Mecca Bingo, Garrowhill Bowling Club, Burnmouth Court Sheltered Housing Calton Athletic.
