On the side of Glasgow East pensioners
2008-07-20
SNP Westminster Candidate John Mason has today (Saturday) promised to stand up for Glasgow East's pensioners. Commenting from Garrowhill Bowling Club with First Minster Alex Salmond, Mr Mason said:
"I promise to stand up for the pensioners in Glasgow East at Westminster and build on the strong actions of the SNP Government. The SNP have delivered for pensioners with their commitment to free bus travel, freezing the council tax, installing a record number of central heating systems, and increasing support for injured veterans.
"The rise in fuel poverty is completely unacceptable. In an energy rich Scotland nearly a quarter of our population – more than half a million households – are still living in fuel poverty.
"As the Westminster MP I will continue to push for real action on increasing the Winter Fuel Payments at Westminster so our pensioners in Glasgow East can have warm homes and live with the dignity they deserve.
"The SNP has improved free personal and nursing care by increasing payments and putting an additional £9 million to help implement carer support strategies. This increase will benefit more than 9,000 people.
"Pensioners are right to be concerned about rising costs. As the MP for Glasgow East I promise to fight hard at Westminster to give pensioners a standard of living they are owed and deserve."
