Annie Lennox backs Independence

Singer Annie Lennox has shown her support for an independent Scotland saying Scotland could have "some kind of new, ethical, visionary stance and it could take on some fresh ideas. That could be amazing, really amazing".

In an interview with the Scotsman newspaper Annie Lennox said "I think Scotland could take a stand in a wonderful way, ecologically and morally and ethically. Scotland could stand for something in the way that Norway has done historically"I think Scotland could take a stand in a wonderful way, ecologically and morally and ethically. Scotland could stand for something in the way that Norway has done historically."

Welcoming her comments SNP MP and Westminster Group Leader Angus Robertson endorsed her calls for a nuclear free Scotland.  Mr Robertson said

"Annie Lennox’s support for Scotland as an independent nation is very welcome. She is just one of hundreds of thousands of people across Scotland who increasingly see the important role Scotland can play as an independent nation.

"An independent Scotland, pursuing a clean, green and peaceful agenda, can be at the forefront of efforts against climate change, supporting peace efforts around the world and playing a positive role in Europe and the United Nations.

"Already, an SNP Government is doubling Scotland’s international aid budget, and is pursuing a nuclear free agenda with no new nuclear power stations being built in Scotland and support across the Scottish Parliament for the removal of nuclear weapons from Scotland’s shores.

"With polls showing a majority of Scots support Independence and the Scottish Government’s National Conversation engaging more and more people in a discussion about Scotland’s future as we move toward a referendum in 2010, an independent Scotland is more than just a sweet dream."
