'Lack of depth' in Scottish broadcasting
There are concerns about a lack of depth, breadth and context in broadcast journalism in Scotland, according to the Scottish Broadcasting Commission.
It has been gathering evidence from academics, politicians, broadcasters and the public on the democratic importance of broadcasting.
The importance of choice in news and current affairs services was one of its key findings.
The commission was set up by First Minister Alex Salmond last year to examine the role and future of broadcasting in Scotland.
Reacting to the report, SNP MP Pete Wishart said: “I very much welcome this interim report by the Scottish Broadcasting Commission and congratulate Blair Jenkins on his work so far.
“The report is the first holistic review of Scottish broadcasting and highlights longstanding concerns as well as emerging issues about broadcasting output in Scotland.
“The Commission has rightly identified how much Scottish people value their broadcast news services and how they are used to access information about what is happening in their community and the wider world.
“The report confirms that a majority of people are in favour of a Scottish Six which is a longstanding SNP policy.
“Not only does this substantiate much of the anecdotal evidence I have heard over recent years but it reflects the rapidly changing political reality in Scotland. The Scottish people want a news service that reflects their everyday experience. They want international, national and local news from a perspective relevant to them. It is no surprise that they want news produced in Scotland.
“The case for the devolution of broadcasting to the Scottish Parliament remains overwhelming. Westminster control has failed Scottish broadcasting and I think it is becoming increasingly clear that we need to have proper Scottish accountability and strategic planning to meet the future opportunities and challenges."
The SBC is due to publish its final report in September.
