SNP membership rises to over 14,000

The Scottish National Party today published its end of quarter membership figures showing a further rise in members.

SNP business convener Angus Robertson MP revealed that membership closed at 31 March at 14,183.

Mr Robertson said: “Building on our historic victory last May, SNP membership continues to rise as the new government sets about delivering for the Scottish people.

“The SNP is clearly benefiting from the new spirit of enthusiasm and optimism in Scotland.”

By contrast with the other political parties, these latest figures confirm a surge of SNP membership in the last five years.

At the end of 2003, SNP membership stood at 9450, but in 2004, following the return of Alex Salmond as party leader, the number of members broke through the 10,000 barrier and by the end of that year stood at 10,854.

A slight increase in 2005 saw membership reach 10,995, but in the run-up to the election the figures jumped considerably to 12,571 by the end of 2006.

By the end of 2007, SNP membership stood at 13,944.
