Labour MPs let Scotland down

As the Labour party meet for their spring conference in Aviemore SNP Westminster leader, Angus Robertson MP, has called on Scottish Labour MPs to apologise for catalogue of betrayal on key Scottish issues.

Mr Robertson said Labour MPs should be “named and shamed” for their appalling record, and highlighted key issues on which Labour MP’s had voted against the Scottish interest:

  • March 2008 – voted against a full inquiry into the legality of the war and the circumstances that led the UK into the conflict.
  • March 2008 – voted to approve more Post Office closures.
  • March 2008 – voted to increase the rate of duty on whisky by the highest amount in a generation.
  • March 2008 – voted against having a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty – as promised in their manifesto.
  • February 2008 – voted against the restoration of competence over fisheries to national control.
  • January 2008 – voted to divert £184million of lottery funding from good causes to subsidise the London Olympics.

Mr Robertson said:

“On issue after issue Scottish Labour MPs have failed to stand up for the national interest.

“In the last few months alone, they have voted down an inquiry into the Iraq war; voted through the Chancellors smash and grab raid on the whisky industry; voted to deny people the chance to vote in a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty; and rubber stamped the diversion of £184million in lottery cash from Scottish good causes to the London Olympics.

“These Scottish Labour MPs are treating people like fools if they think nobody has noticed their catalogue of betrayal, and they should be named and shamed.

“Clearly, Scottish Labour MP’s have not learned any lessons from Labour’s humiliation at the Scottish Parliament elections last year. They are doomed to repeat the same mistakes, and follow the orders of their London masters.

“It’s no surprise that opinion polls and by-election results show the SNP leading for the Westminster election.

“Scotland needs SNP watchdogs at Westminster, not Labour lapdogs.”
