Welcome to the SNP Website

Welcome to our new look SNP website. We have a host of new features, including new forums, interactive issues, syndicated news feeds and more.

Website members (and of course party members) are able to post on our forums, and to leave comments on many of the pages around the site. We hope that in the near future we will be able to invite you to help us develop some of our key policies.

We also, of course, have a new look and feel, headlined by images of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. As well as getting a facelift our website has also changed software, moving from Plone to Drupal.

So do you like what you see? Leave a comment and let us know.

I have just signed up for a user account, but find there are some features that I can't access, not being an SNP member. I wouldn't expect to be able to visit the SNP Members section, but Forums!? Also I can't create any content. You should remove links to functionality that a normal user can't interact with, and explain what the difference between a normal member and an SNP member is. Getting a login screen for off limits sections is also confusing when you are logged in. Also, your request a new password link is broken, it points to http://www.snp.org/dev/drupal-5.2/user/password, which doesn't exist.

Thanks for your feedback It

Thanks for your feedback It is unfortunately the case that we have had to restrict access to the forums to party members at the present time. I'll take a look at the broken password link and see what I can do.

Hello

I have just received my membership card today and for the first time in my life Im a member of a political party!I cant say I will be much of an asset as Im pushing on a bit but I am happy to make a public commit ment to the SNP in view of the visible benefits being enjoyed by us all and my admiration for the First Minister.A leader of whom we can all be proud.     Lynda

Hello

Hello Lynda!

Given that we hear so much nowadays about the rise of political apathy, it is great to see you, and the other people joining us recently, bucking a trend in which our rivals still appear to be mired!

It is time to move Scotland forward

Scotland is steeped in culture and history. I think that it is time to take Scotland forward through the Scottish Government creating a culture of aspirations and opportunity for all.

That also means that the people should be allowed to place their own blogs on the SNP site to encourage democartic debate and contribute to the new Politics of ideas in taking this nation state forward.

That means reaching out to all political divides and working collectively to improve the geo social ,economic and political fabric of the nation state of Scotland.

Scotland has many talents and is not just reliant upon the North Sea Oil, there is scope for improvement for the nation's economy as a whole.

That is the vision I would like to see in the Scottish Government in taking the nation forward.

The future is bright and there is much to look forward to.

The First Minister is a leader for all the people and of all the social strata's. A nation with ideas and vision is one that is rich in its intellectual portfolio.

One day there would be a Secretary General at the United Nations who would be from Scotland, that would be a very proud day for Scotland as a whole. As a nation state it can take its seat amongst the community of nation states at the United Nations and equally within the European Union as well.

There should be a culture of positive entrepreneuralism in Scotland and also to creating new business as well as prosperity for the nation as a whole.

The first year in Government has shown that the SNP are able to lead as a Government for all the people. The next year shall be equally a good year in Government.

Well done to a very fine First Minister who shall continue to tell the people as it is and be a very successful leader for Scotland.

new party member

I have just signed up as a party member, I have never been a member of any political party before, but I do believe the wind of change is gusting, and now is the time to stand up with those that will move my nation forward into a new scottish era.

Political Virgin

This too is my first time! I've never been joined with a political party before. Nor had I ever cast a vote until May 3rd 2007. I'd been layed off work for sometime & was really looking for something constructive to while the hours away. Of all the stuff I could've done I opted to join a political party & help campaign for independence! So hats off to Alex Salmond for catching my attention. He's a great leader! Every country needs a father figure & Scotland's been an orphan for far too long.

ethno-centricism revisited

As an ex-pat (born in Scotland) now living in the USA I thought you might be interested in an e-mail exchange I just had with BBC World News. It just goes to show how deep and pervasive English ethno-centrisism is in so-called British institutions. Even the indignant response from the spokesman for the BBC makes the point better than I could. Read the whole thing.

More importantly, isn't it time to tackle this subject (again) in these times of political correctness- seems our English cousins still don't get it!

Sir - I agree any further communication is pointless, since you're obviously part of the problem! -  there's no such thing as the "United Kingdom and Northern Ireland"; it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
thanks for the reply - I'll pursue my lonely vigil for accuracy and fairness elsewhere

Dear Mr DorricottThank you for your email. Unfortunately we cannot enter into lengthy discussions of this nature but we can assure you it was not our intention to cause any offence. Due to the time constraints of a news programme or report, we must make our news as concise as possible while being as clear as possible. We assume that our international audience know what we are referring to when we say ‘Great Britain’ or ‘Britain’ and we are certainly not mentioning these references with the intention of deliberately leaving any of the members of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland out. A news report must flow in order to keep the viewer’s attention and interest and our editors may feel that things would become stilted and monotonous if every reference we made to the UK was, for example, ‘United Kingdom and Northern Ireland’. We disagree with you that Mat Frei’s report has the effect suggested by you and we have received no other similar complaints from any other viewer who saw this report. Your comments have, nevertheless, been logged and seen by our news editors and we do appreciate your taking the time and trouble to write to us with your concerns.Best regardsMario GianniniBBC World News

Sir - the courtesy of a reply would be appreciated

>>> Jon Dorricott 7/30/2008 8:10 AM >>>
Sir - thank you for your reply. I will continue watching your programme since , by and large, it is the most thorough news service available on cable TV. Your in-depth coverage is unique in this country and your objectivity is refreshing. It's therefore very disappointing when a distinguished news company, noted for its reach and global credibility, uses incorrect geo-political terminology; especially for the constituent parts of its home country!  It diminishes your authority and calls into question the standards you apply to yourself.

Further, this is not some innocuous slip, it's offensive.

I don't think you realize the effect  these unfortunate remarks have on the non-English members of the UK. And perhaps explains the bewilderment English people seem to have with the depth of feeling generated by these and other ethno-centric 'slips' and the contribution they inevitably have on the gradual polarization of the UK.

If other parts of the UK believe they don't belong or don't matter, then no wonder there is growing resentment and a move towards separation. In other words, why bother when a government instrument such as the BBC allows gross mischaracterization of the political state and permits ill-informed and offensive comment from senior journalists in its employment.

Dear Mr Jon Dorricott

Thank you for your email.

We are very grateful to you for taking the trouble of writing to us with
your comments and opinions. Although, due to our limited resources, we
can't address every point and issue in detail and cannot provide a
detailed response to everyone who writes to us, we do read every email
in full and I can tell you that we will make sure that the management
and staff at BBC World News get to see the points that you have made.

We are always pleased to receive any feedback from our viewers and are

quality of the service we provide to viewers worldwide. All comments,
criticisms and suggestions are noted, then forwarded to all the relevant
departments and managerial staff at the channel for their attention, so
please do be assured that the points you have raised will be seen by the

comment: Did I really hear Matt Frei on BBC America news recently use
the terms 'Great Britain', 'England' and 'Britain' in the same article
to describe the UK National Health Service being set up 60 years ago? As
I understood it, the NHS was for the whole UK, was it not. "Great
Britain" does not include Northern Ireland; "England" ignores N.Ireland,
Wales and Scotland. Only the term Britain is correct in its use to
describe a national initiative for the whole of the UK.
>This is not the first time I've had to complain about these inaccurate
and offensive terms being used on your network - but to have one of your
anchors perpetuate this narrow minded, uneducated terminology is not
only against your written policy but is offensive to non-GB and
non-English members of the UK. This has got to stop.
