Westminster must publish hidden opinion poll

The SNP has today called on the UK Government to release the details of a taxpayer-funded opinion poll – after reports suggesting that the results have been hidden as they confirm growing support for Yes.

Newspaper reports today show that the Cabinet Office commissioned polling on independence from Ipsos Mori – at a cost of more than £46,000 to the taxpayer.

The UK Government’s failure to publish their own poll results comes as polls continue to show growing support for Yes and falling support for No – raising questions regarding what the No campaign has to hide.

Commenting, SNP MSP Linda Fabiani said:

“The UK Government has spent over £46,000 of the public’s money on this polling – so it is only right that the public gets to see the results of polling that we have paid for.

"And the fact that this extensive and expensive polling exercise is controlled by the UK Government Cabinet Office in London indicates that the No campaign is being run out of Downing Street - not by people in Scotland.

“That Westminster is so desperate to hide the results of this poll speaks volumes. Polls show that the momentum is with the Yes campaign.

“No matter how bad the results are for the No camp, David Cameron must face up to the uncomfortable truths in the poll and ensure that his government publishes the results in full – failing to do so would be completely unacceptable.”

The story is reported on Page 2 of today’s Sun.

The Cabinet Office has confirmed public expenditure of £46,550 to Ipsos Mori on “market research on attitudes in Scotland towards Scottish independence”.
