Tories : end infighting and focus on economy
TORIES MUST END INFIGHTING AND FOCUS ON ECONOMY
NEW DATA PAINTS BLEAK FUTURE FOR UK ECONOMY
In the same week the Treasury launched another anti-independence paper, the UK Government has faced further criticism as official statistics show just how far the UK economy remains from health.
A day after the International Monetary Fund urged the government to do more to spur growth, a detailed breakdown of Office for National Statistics data has painted a bleaker picture than the headline growth rate.
The updated estimate- which followed last month’s initial reading- showed consumer spending rose by the smallest margin since the second half of 2011, while business investment fell for the second successive quarter.
SNP Westminster Treasury spokesperson Stewart Hosie MP said:
“The Office for National Statistics data provides a reality check, and adds weight to the recent calls from the IMF to spur growth. The Tories must stop getting distracted by infighting over Europe and other issues, and focus on economic recovery.
“It is vital that the Chancellor George Osborne listens to this message. The economy has been flat-lining for nearly three years, and we see the effects of an austerity agenda that is just not working. These statistics, and the dismal IMF assessment of the UK economy follows the Chancellor’s wholly inadequate budget - and that is before the next round of deep spending cuts that Westminster is planning.
"This week the Scottish Government set out the economic case for independence, so that we control the levers in Scotland to build a stronger economy and fairer society. Only if people vote Yes next September can we get economic policies in Scotland that reflect our needs and priorities.”
