Embarrassment for LibDems after Tory member poll
The results of a poll of 1,742 members of the Conservative Party have demonstrated that Danny Alexander and Michael Moore are both more popular with Tory activists than George Osborne.
The survey published on the ConservativeHome website was conducted between 28th and 30th June.
The results of the regular survey will be deeply embarrassing to the Lib Dems as it undermines their efforts to claim there is any distance between the agendas of the two coalition partners. The fact that two of their key cabinet members are more popular with Conservatives than even the Chancellor will blow those assertions out of the water.
Commenting, SNP MSP Chic Brodie who left the Lib Dems to join the SNP said:
“It speaks volumes about the conduct of Danny Alexander and Michael Moore that their popularity amongst Tories is outstripping even that of the Chancellor.
“Their pursuit of a Tory agenda in Government is winning them huge plaudits amongst Conservatives, but is inviting the fury of people in Scotland.
“There can be no doubt about it, this is a huge embarrassment for the Lib Dems. They may have tried to portray themselves as separate from the Tories, but the popularity of their leading lights amongst Conservatives shows that they are in lock-step with the Tory cuts agenda.
“With results like this it’s no wonder that so many Lib Dem voters are turning to the SNP.
“These results are the latest in a series of embarrassments for Danny Alexander, following his recent missteps on mortgages, oil taxation and regional pay. While his credibility in Scotland is crumbling as a result of his actions, it is clear that his adherence to Tory dogma is winning him friends he could well do without.”
