SNP bring an end to right to buy

The SNP today brought an end to the right to buy as MSPs passed a new law that will ditch the right to buy (RTB) for new council house and housing association tenants.

The right to buy will also be abolished for all new homes built in the social sector encouraging new house building and securing homes for the future.

Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said:

"This is a truly historic day for social housing in Scotland.

"By passing the Housing Bill, the Scottish Parliament has ensured that

social housing is protected for future generations - providing homes for

the people, and jobs in the Scottish economy."

SNP MSP Bob Doris added:

"The SNP is righting one of the major problems faced by social housing in Scotland.

"The Tories right to buy was one of the few relics of thatcherism left in Scotland.  Now we have a housing policy that is fit for the future."
