Moray MP Angus Robertson and Richard Lochhead - the local MSP –have hailed the turnout of more than 6,000 who took part in a march and rally to save RAF Lossiemouth and urged the UK Government to listen to the message being sent by the community.
Mr Robertson – the SNP Westminster leader and Defence spokesperson – said:
“The turnout has exceeded all expectations and sends a clear message from Scotland to Downing Street that Lossiemouth must not close.
“The decimation of these bases is purely and simply crazy, both in defence and economic terms.
“This is the equivalent of 700,000 jobs going in London, for the Prime Minister that would be unthinkable, so why do it in Moray.
“The community, and politicians from right across the political divide have sent the strongest possible message to the Prime Minister that this is unacceptable.”
Local MSP Richard Lochhead added:
“This community led effort has attracted an incredible level of interest from all over the country and is tribute to the fantastic work being done by many local volunteers and the Moray Task Force, a multi agency group, set up to work alongside the community in ensuring the best possible case for retaining these vital defence interests in Moray.
“The thousands of people who turned out and marched have sent a loud message to the Ministry of Defence and the UK Government that RAF Lossiemouth must be saved."
