SNP mark World Poverty Day

SNP International Development Spokesperson Pete Wishart has given his full backing to World Poverty Day 2010 and said that in the next Westminster Parliament, SNP MPs would continue to call on the UK Government to finally meet its international aid commitments – after 40 years of failing to do so.

In 1970, the UK committed to UN Resolution 2626 to donate 0.7% of its GDP to support poorer countries. In 2008, the UK’s contribution was just 0.48%. 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the pledge – and five years since the G8 promised to boost aid at Gleneagles.

Commenting, Mr Wishart said:

"In Government, the SNP has already doubled Scotland's international aid budget and is building strong links with Malawi and other Sub-Saharan nations. As an independent nation Scotland would meet othe 0.7% international aid commitment.

"Sadly, this commitment is not being met by the London parties. Despite pledging to donate 0.7% of GDP in 1970, successive London governments have simply failed to deliver. While the London parties issue warm words, they don't take action.

"At this election, only the SNP is offering an alternative vision.

"The cosy consensus of the London politicians needs to be broken.
Returning a local and national SNP champion who will not only argue for the interests of Scotland's communities but ensure we live up to our international responsibilities is the way to do this."
